Your Guide to the Benefits of Studio Headshots and Portraits

When was the last time you had professional photos done?

If your answer is that you’ve never had them or it’s been a long time since your last session – trust me I totally get it.

Life gets so busy and it can be easy to push this lower and lower on your priority list. But think about it – whether it’s a headshot, artistic portrait, or personal branding session having these high-quality, professional images is a powerful way to represent who you are, tell your story, and allow you to express yourself in a new way.

Also, choosing to have these photos done in a studio will give you the perfect, controlled setting to capture your best self.

As a Maryland portrait photographer, I believe that these photos (whether it’s a portrait or headshot) are absolutely an investment worth making to help you tell your visual narrative and also show you being your full, fabulous self.

That’s why I recently made the decision to rent a new studio space for my own business so that I can offer stunning and notable portrait photography sessions to my own clients in a professional studio setting.

If you’re wondering if professional headshots or portrait photography in a studio is right for you then you’ve come to the right place to get all of your questions answered. I’m sharing with you the benefits of choosing to have studio headshots or studio portraits and also I’ve added a behind-the-scenes look at a recent studio portrait photography session I had with a client of my own.

Let’s dive in…

Professional Studio Headshots

You might be thinking to yourself how easy it would be to pull out the camera on your phone, stand against a blank wall, snap a pic, and call it a day instead of paying for a professional headshot.

While that might feel easier, the reality is that it’s quite easy to tell the difference between a headshot that was taken with a phone camera versus a professional camera.

Also, studio headshots can be so much more powerful and impactful compared to a casual phone photo. Remember a headshot creates a strong first impression and it’s important that we make it a positive one.

Studios are a great place to get headshots done because you’ll have optimal lighting, different background options, and an environment with minimal distractions.

All of these different elements will make a huge difference in how your final photos turn out. Also, if you opt for a studio to get your headshots another huge plus is that you won’t have to worry about the weather. Fantastic right? No worrying about rain, wind blowing hair in your face, or being too hot or too cold.

Want to add in a unique prop? Totally possible. How about a textured backdrop? You’ve got it! The great thing about a studio is that you can customize it to how you want while still having headshots that are professional and flattering.

Portrait Photography in A Studio

Portraits, like headshots, can be taken in a variety of settings so why should you choose a studio?

I’ve photographed in various locations and I’ve come to appreciate that each setting offers its own unique charm and serves a different purpose.

That’s why I’m not making a comparison of location portrait photos vs studio portrait photos but rather I want to take this as an opportunity to highlight some top reasons why a studio is a great option to have your portraits taken and why it should be something you consider for your session.

Benefits of a Studio for Your Portrait Photos

Creativity and Customization

Creative possibilities in a studio are endless. You can have your portraits match the exact aesthetic and vision you have in mind whether that’s changing the lighting, props, backdrops, etc. You can also experiment to find the customization and details that you love.

Keeps the focus on you and minimal distractions

A studio means that you’ll have personalized attention and won’t have any external distractions to worry about such as unpredictable weather, background noise, etc. A studio environment is also a great option especially if you are someone who values your privacy.

It can sometimes feel a bit awkward taking photos in front of a bunch of random people (especially earlier on in the session), so having a studio space can help you feel more comfortable and confident trying new poses and ideas!

Easy wardrobe changes

If you want to bring multiple outfits you’ll be able to have easy wardrobe changes without searching for a public bathroom or becoming a contortionist to change in your car.

Always the best lighting

A great aspect of a studio is the lighting because you’ll always have lighting that is flattering, controlled, and adjustable to make you look your absolute best! Plus, you can even play around with some cool colored lighting if you want or find different lighting effects to really make your photos unique.

Behind the Scenes with Liz Kleinrock

I recently had the opportunity to take portraits/headshots of Liz Kleinrock who identifies as Korean, Jewish, queer, transracial adoptee, antibias, and is an antiracist nationally recognized educator, author, and consultant.

Liz wanted these portraits/headshots because they told me they work in many different spaces- some with children, some with adults, some around books they’ve written, some around DEI, some with schools, and some in many other types of companies and organizations, and that it’s important to be able to have a selection of photos so they can always choose how they want to represent themself.

We took a variety of photos in the studio with different backdrops, outfits, and poses to capture Liz’s story and personality. Not only were we able to get serious photos, but we were also able to have a bit of fun and get some more casual images.

You can learn more about Liz’s work here.
