If you want an iconic wedding, have you considered having your wedding at a museum? With a museum wedding, there’s built-in entertainment for your guests to enjoy, such as the art installations and museum exhibits. A museum also offers an unforgettable backdrop to set the scene for your celebration.
As a Maryland wedding photographer, I know there are so many different, amazing venues to choose from here, but if you want a creative, quirky, and memorable venue, then the American Visionary Art Museum is the spot for your wedding.
If you’re thinking about having an American Visionary Arts Museum wedding, here are some of the best things to know about the venue before your big day.
American Visionary Arts Museum Wedding Venue
The American Visionary Arts Museum is a truly one-of-a-kind venue nestled in Federal Hill near the Inner Harbor.
The Inner Harbor is a beautiful outdoor spot for a first look with your partner or to take your portraits against the water, along with the many different assorted sculptures, art installations, and museum backdrops. Or you could also take pictures at the Federal Hill Park which is conveniently close by.
Here, you can choose from three different venues:
The Museum Café
This venue is for a more intimate wedding – it’s elegant, stylish, and has a beautiful rooftop you and your guests can access to overlook the grounds.
The Sculpture Barn & Wildflower Garden
This is a stunning indoor/outdoor space that has larger-than-life installations, vibrant wildflower gardens, and greenery that will make you feel like you’ve been swept away to a fairytale wonderland.
Then, imagine dancing the night away in the Sculpture Barn on a black-and-white checkered dance floor with twinkling string lights overhead in a magical atmosphere.
The Jim Rouse Visionary Center
This is a spacious and elegant banquet room that has a colorful hot air balloon suspended from the ceiling, three floors of charming decor, high ceilings, and unique lighting.

Can’t Miss Spots at The American Visionary Arts Museum
There are so many beautiful spots throughout The American Visionary Arts Museum that you have to check out as part of your wedding experience here!
These are my personal can’t-miss spots:
The marble spiral staircase and rooftop
If you’re having a smaller wedding or an elopement, did you know that you can say “I do” at the top of the beautiful marble staircase? You could plan to host your ceremony on the spiral staircase then have cocktails in the café and a reception in the Barn. The spiral staircase is also a stunning spot to take photos.
The rooftop is ultra-stylish and has a cool, contemporary design. It is a relaxing spot with serene views.
The reality-bending sculptures
There are so many different, fun sculptures to check out here, from the Bird’s Nest Balcony to the WhirliGig sculpture, that immediately grab your attention and are interesting to look at.
The enchanting garden
The garden includes, of course, beautiful natural beauty to admire, but it also has a cascading and illuminated water foundation wall with multiple carved stone heads, each spouting water.
The museum’s entrance
The entrance to the museum is covered in a mosaic of broken glass and mirrors, with a huge sculpture hanging overhead. This is another spot where you could take some of your wedding photos with a unique backdrop.
Hannah + Jim’s wedding at the American Visionary Arts Museum
Hannah and Jim had an unforgettable, colorful wedding at the American Visionary Arts Museum (AVAM) in Baltimore at the Sculpture Barn and Garden.
Jim is an actual circus clown, and Hannah is a burlesque performer. They have been performing in the DC area for years doing everything from producing Yolks on You (a burlesque and variety brunch) and performing with Astro Pop Events and Elvis Birthday Fight Club.
Their wedding was the epitome of them. From whoopie cushions on the guests’ seats to a wedding dress made by burlesque performer and bridesmaid London St Juniper that featured custom carrot lining material!
The best man even made the bride’s ring appear right out of her ear before giving it to the groom during the ceremony. They even traded the traditional sand ceremony for a love volcano that they made explode.
Not only did they focus on making the ceremony special, but also the reception. Their centerpieces were an amazing collection of kitsch and knick-knacks that were truly special. They even let their guests take the centerpiece items home as favors!
I loved celebrating with them. Their day was full of so much love, laughter, and fun, and we couldn’t have asked for a more magical location to celebrate these two tying the knot.
